Sunday Lunch at Thomas’s of York!

Sunday Lunch at Thomas’s of York!

When you wander past Thomas’s of York you’d be forgiven for not quite knowing what to expect when you walk through those doors.  Royalty peer down at you from the windows, juxtaposed against food menus and karaoke posters!  Weird right?

Well, venture in and you’ll find a whole pub full of quirky furniture, hilarious posters, over the top décor and….weird stuff.  But, it’s not an art bar, and it’s not trying to be metaphorical.  It’s just a really fun, really unique setting for you to enjoy drinks and the most delicious food.

When we went inside, we needed a few minutes to adjust to the interior, but the lovely bar staff are soon with you to make you feel comfortable!  We went on a Sunday afternoon to sample their Sunday Dinner option.  We’ve heard great things about their “Mammoth” portions, so went hungry and not knowing what to expect!

The Menu

Thomas’ has a ridiculously big menu, especially for what we’re used to seeing in a bar.  You’ll find your usual pub food, a bit of Indian, a bit of Japanese and some really useful intolerance friendly options.  Ask for a Vegetarian, Vegan or Coeliac option and you’ve still got a huge array of food to choose from.

But, we were there for Sunday Dinner, and we weren’t going to settle for anything else!  We put our orders in and less than 20 minutes later, we were given two HUGE dinners; one vegetarian, and one a traditional beef dinner.

You’re going to find yourself faced with a plate/bowl absolutely packed full of crispy potatoes, creamy mash, honeyed parsnips, crunchy carrots and all topped off with a massive, freshly baked Yorkshire pudding.  Then of course you have your choice of meat (beef, chicken, lamb, pork), or a tasty nut roast for the veggies.  The best thing about this plate, is the more that you eat, the more delicious ingredients you’ll find.

We really couldn’t fault this meal.  It’s definitely a bit gluttonous, but I kind of expect that with a Sunday dinner.

For drinks, you have an extensive cocktail list to choose from, with some fruity options, and some down right boozy options!  We may have gone with a naughty Corona cocktail, but the dinner definitely lined out stomach for it.

The Atmosphere

The atmosphere is very much, pub.  Lots of music and bustle, but with enough nooks and crannies that you can find the perfect little spot to get settled in.

It’s got a lovely friendly vibe, so you’ll find that you have a really diverse crowd in, with hen parties, groups of friends catching up, and even families enjoying a pit stop from the city.  We loved the upstairs function room, which is a lovely setting for private gatherings – and is ideal for tourist groups too.

The Service

The service is a real highlight of the pub.  All bar staff were smiley and friendly, and happy to talk through the menu with us.  We had a follow up once we had our food, and dirty plates were cleared promptly, and more drinks offered.

I get the impression that they’re really accustomed to tourist trade, as they have a really welcoming way that would make any tourist to the city feel like they belong.

Overall, I was hugely impressed by our visit.  A great all round experience, with the perfect setting, product and service to please even the pickiest of clientele. If you’re eating there, then go hungry, and if you have your eye on dessert, then be modest with your dining.  After polishing off my entire dinner, I could do nothing but nap after!
